Soul Mates

I am going to blame my romantic streak first on Danielle Steel and then on Nora Roberts. As a teen I read Steel's The Promise. (I just looked it up, it was published in 1978 - I was 17. I know I was a hopeless romantic WAY before then...what on earth was I reading before that? It is most definitely the novel I remember the most.)

ANYWAY, it started me on a lifelong love of romance novels and at thisclose to 52 I can tell you Nora Roberts has kept it going. Nothing makes me happier than when Roberts' writes a series of books.
::: sigh :::

I know I am not alone in this addiction to love. To romance. To passion.

I also don't think this is limited to a woman only phenomenon. Nicholas Sparks it totally proof of that.

I went onto Pinterest and typed in "soul mate." Then I clicked on boards. I lost count when I got to over 600 Pinterest Boards with soul mate in the title. OK, a few WERE about shoes, and some were about food (?), but the majority of them were about the love of a soul mate. I went through some of the boards, found a lot of quotes I adored, added them to the many I had already saved and created the slide show below.

Do you have a favorite slide? Just so you know... I have several.

So, I am curious, dear readers. What do you think? Is there such a person? Are you with your soul mate? (Now would probably be a good time to take advantage of the anonymous comment ability...) Do you think there's a red string from one person to you? Do you meet when you're young? When you're old? Do you reconnect with someone from your past after you've lived life for a while? Is it a "When Harry Met Sally" kind of thing?

Let's discuss ~ in the comments, on FB, go to the Contact Me tab to send me a private email.

Music today: "A Thousand Years" from the Piano Guys, as well as the Christina Perri version - just in case you need to hear the lyrics.

You pose a deep and interesting question. Do soul mates exist? If so, where and when do we meet them?

I believe there are people over the course of a lifetime with whom we feel a deep affinity. These are the ones I call "my people" or "my tribe." Of those, a certain number are friends for a lifetime. Two are my children, and---now---my grandchild. On two occasions in my life, they have been what I would call my "soul mates" in a romantic, partnered relationship. I'm very grateful for all those who have graced my life with love in this way.

In the larger view, I believe there are many variations on the theme and experience of love. Many nuances of love. I believe "love" is a verb rather than a noun, or more about how we treat others than about what we feel. As a therapist, I have seen people many times mistake attraction for love.

So what, then, would I say a soul mate is? He or she is someone who stands with me (and I with them) through the struggles and joys of life, who supports me (and I them) in more life issues than disagrees with me, and who helps me become my Best Self, as I also help that person. A soul mate can be a best friend, a child, a parent, or a lover. Maybe even a pet. Why not?

Do I believe there is only one soul mate per person? Absolutely not. How and when we meet is a matter of Mystery, possibly a plan on the part of The Universe (or what many people call God), but just as possibly a matter of pure serendipity. And, personally, I love that element of mystery.

Lovely question, Maggie. I'll be interested to read what others have to say.
