Surgery Today

I am nowhere near flexible enough to lick my elbow, so I could never attempt this challenge. Bella, on the other hand, has this down.

Surgery is scheduled for this afternoon. It seems relatively routine and I don't expect a long recovery time.

The doctor will be replacing the shattered part of the radius bone with a "T" shaped piece of titanium. I said it looks like the pull start of a lawn mower. Someone else has suggested it looks like a wine stopper. I love that description!

I will have a splint for another week and then it is time for Physical Therapy. I have been encouraged by others stating a month in they had the full range of motion in their arm and they were good to go.

The single worst part of the day is no coffee.

I will take any and all love you've got after 1pm today - just keep it coming.

Peter - Class of '14

Yearbook Ad
Eighteen years ago, Laura, a former neighbor of mine, was walking the neighborhood with her son Brian in the stroller. I can vividly remember her telling me that our boys were the Hen Hud Class of 2014.

I also recall being gobsmacked that she had even figured that out.

I was utterly overwhelmed with the baby stupids at the time and couldn't even fathom such a thing as Peter's high school graduation; I wanted the kid to hold his own bottle.

Well.

Here we are.

Graduation Day.

It happened THAT fast.

Peter has been socialized from a very early age as he was a well rounded day care baby. Some of his best friends remain kids from the Montrose Child Care Center.

He was precocious beyond his years as a little boy.

He is exactly just right as an 18 year old.

Peter has a dazzling smile, a super dimple, a firm handshake and the ability to speak confidently in public (thank you Barbara Pettersen and Robin Dolacky!).

He will get by on brains, looks, and charm for a lot of his life.

I love this kid.

He IS all that AND the bag of chips WITH dip.

His world is JUST beginning to open. It is big and beautiful and filled with opportunities galore.

College will mold him in ways living with his parents never can. The experiences will help him become an even more exceptional young man.

My statement to Peter (and his friends) as they leave the house every time they have gone out for years has been, "Don't do anything stupid with long term consequences."

I know doing stupid things is all part of growing up. So are mistakes. And accidents. And thinking you're invincible.

And so, my favorite son, on this HUGE day of your life, I wish you more than I can put into words.

  • Spread your wings but remember your roots.
  • Travel and explore.
  • Laugh. A lot.
  • Always take pride in your work even if you're doing it at the last minute.
  • Do your best.
  • Meet new people.
  • Broaden your horizon.
  • STUDY!
  • Have fun.
  • Be safe.
  • Be happy.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Your future is waiting. It's going to be awesome!

xoxo

Homebound Saturday

When I was thirteen I broke my left arm. My parents enjoyed irony; my get well present was a ten-speed bike.

I was forbidden from riding it.

Naturally I waved to my father when he came around the corner in his car and I was riding with no hands. Doh!

Today is the first Saturday in a year I am not working at the salon without having something else on the agenda. I have been off for two retreats and a girls weekend.

That's it.

It is strange to be here and not there.

I remain incredibly grateful to Cate for working these many hours for me without flinching!

I will be going in later to "help" with payroll. It will be nice to see everyone!

Right Arm Update
I saw Dr. Schefer yesterday. I was a the office for over two hours. I never want to hear a complaint about waiting in the salon ever again.

He took a new set of x-rays and the elbow has remained in place. Hurrah!

Despite the many people thinking about me, the bone didn't miraculously put itself back into one whole piece.

So, on Monday I will have surgery. We are set for arrival at 3:15pm at Northern Westchester. Marco's dad is having surgery at HVHC in the morning. Jane will take me in the afternoon. It's a busy day for Pinque's.

The broken piece will be replaced with a titanium "T". The splint will go back on for a week. Physical Therapy will begin ASAP and will continue until my bionic self is done.

I have numerous emails & texts I would love to respond to, but this left handed typing is hard and frankly, healing is tiring. If you have communicated with me - THANK YOU! I APPRECIATE IT.

Enjoy your Saturday!

Doctor Dance Friday

I woke up to this picture on my FB wall courtesy of my friend, Jen. It is so perfect I knew I needed to use it here!

I head to the expert this morning, Dr. Schefer, to determine the next phase of healing. I am not certain what to expect, although surgery seems likely.

Somehow I doubt he will tell me to pit the lime in the coconut and mix them both together. Doesn't it look like the squirrel could be interpretative dancing to that song?

Happy Friday...as always, let's dance!

Here's To Us

This has been a few days of living in my own head. Of learning how to use my left hand like my right. Of celebrating small tasks for the victories they are.

This has been a few days of meals being delivered to us. Of baseball games, the beach and work not really stopping for any of us.

Check out the Backstage website to see the pictures on the home page AND on the page just for Cast Party pictures to see what I've been up to.

I started the morning having breakfast with my friend Bonnie. It was a fantastic way to begin and the food was superior! We went to the Wobble Cafe in case you're wondering.

The rest of the day is for running errands. First stop - the doctor for Bella.

I heard this song for the first time on Glee. It was the sanitized version. THIS is the better version. Thanks Mary for having it on YOUR blog.

With Peter graduating on Sunday, along with this week, it is the perfect music.

Fair warning: speakers off around the kids.
Here's to us.
Here's to love.
All the times that we've messed up.
Here's to you.
Fill the glass.
Cuz the last few nights have kicked my ass!

Bloomers In A Bunch

When you are right handed and you need to get dressed using only your left hand, I am here to tell you, your undies get in a legitimate bunch!

OH (!) The things we take for granted.

Today's Wish List
  • a shower
  • getting my new lenses put in my glasses (3rd time will be the charm)
  • a pedicure
  • hair washed and dried
  • a trip to the library
All of this will happen at some point today.

Yesterday I watched far too many hours of HGTV, DIY and the Food Network.

Not being able to drive is no picnic either.

Ah, being grounded, such a unique concept for me as an adult. I spent a decent portion of my teens grounded -I was used to it then.

AND...just in case you were wondering, yes, it is possible to be ambidextrous in the loo! ::: whew :::

All in all this isn't too terrible.

I am in relatively little pain - this is the elbow that had tennis elbow to begin with - now it's sporting a splint and a sling. My family has been awesome. My friends are always fabulous. The Internet is entertaining. I can still do some work at home. Meals are being prepped.

This is certainly not life threatening. It's just inconvenient.

Miraculous Pity Party

Day Two ~ The Right Arm Chronicles

I woke up and felt the need to have a pity party. Not a long one. Just a poor, poor, woe is me moment.

And then the miracles kicked in.

Because this is how my life works. I just so happened to hear from my therapist, and Kathy, and my friend Elaine all before I could win an award for leading actress in a drama.

Elaine is a famous Athletic Trainer (really). And that's all fine and dandy, but, more importantly, she is one of my dearest friends. So she came by and hooked me up on how to properly ice the arm AND how to elevate it. THAT has made a huge difference in just a few hours.

I have heard from the specialist and will be seeing him on Friday at 10:30. Surgery may or mat not be needed - BUT - since the bone is shattered, it's looking like i may need to have a bone replacement.

Go big or go home, right?!
Picture
I would like to give a shout out to Peter. He racked up a few awards last night along with scholarship money. I am so proud of this kid!

He has been an enormous help today when I truly needed it.
Picture
We had leftovers from the party and meals delivered from Marlene and Nikki as well as from Mirene. It makes such a difference and we really appreciate it!

Music today...well, it works!

Painful Gratitude

6/23/2014

ALL party images copyright Rana Faure
First off, let's start with the gratitude I began the day with yesterday...
Picture
my gorgeous partner Kathy & I
Kathy and I know how to throw a party!

And what a party it was. SO MUCH FUN! We figure there were nearly 150 people coming and going throughout the night. There was an abundance of food, drinks, mini cupcakes and flowers.
Picture
When too much is never enough...
Picture
These glorious flowers were ultimately my demise...
Our family was going to a party yesterday and I couldn't see letting these magnificent arrangements wither away in our 80° salon. I jumped in my car, returned a book to the library and stopped at Cole's Market to pay our bill.

As I was leaving Cole's my friend Lucy was going in. I honked, we chatted, I suggested she come along for a ride down to the salon
. Lucy hadn't seen the bathroom yet and it is something!
Picture
Seriously?! Isn't this awesome?
So off we went. We loaded up the vases I brought, we cleaned the barbicide jars to put the combs back, we washed off pollen and prepared to head home. We put everything in my car, I went to lock the door and SHAZAM (!) like Humpty Dumpty, I took a great fall.
Picture
"I fell & I couldn't get up!"
I tripped walking up the curb to go lock the salon door. Not even a little glamorous. I knew the second it happened it was bad. Right knee, left knee, arm out, chin, lip. UGH.

I dislocated my right elbow. I broke the right arm in multiple places. It was ugly. It reminded of the time I broke my left arm when I was thirteen. So yes, to answer my friend Barbara's question, I did go back in time!

Lucy drove me to the hospital. Marco met us there. I nearly passed out in the waiting room and as such was whisked away in a wheelchair and quickly put in a bed. I called Kathy from the car. I called my mom. I called Cate. I called Jane - who documented the day on her iPad - because she came right over to the hospital. I called my friend Cara. I called on the healers, and the family and the universe to help move the healing along.

And boy, oh boy, let me assure you, it is working. The percocet is a handy dandy little helper as well.

I slept OK through the night. I showered this morning. I went for a CAT scan earlier today to determine if I will need surgery.

Tonight is the Senior Awards dessert so Kathy brought me to the salon and washed and dried my hair so I am quasi presentable.

I took a little nap after my 3:00pm percocet dose.

I am surrounded by friends from near and far who have been in touch the past twenty four hours. I have spoken to adored friends from high school, and from right here right now.

As I laid in the hospital bed yesterday, surrounded by astonishing nurses and people I love, I was grateful for so much I was actually crying.
  • I have health insurance.
  • I have the perfect business partnership with the exact right person.
  • I own a business that will allow me to take off.
  • We have workers comp.
  • I have Cate to step right in and work my hours.
  • I have a spectacular network of family and friends.
  • I called on the healers and the prayer warriors and I got good zaps of love.
  • Meals are being provided and I am eternally grateful.
  • I have figured out how to text and type left handed.
  • I remain nervous to poop, I'm not gonna lie!

The moral of this blog? Slow down. Take it easy. Feel gratitude. Love your friends and tell them. Watch where you're going. And trust the universe knows what it's doing.

And I'm free - free falling
Yeah I'm free - free falling

And a FABULOUS party it will be!
It's Friday ~ let's dance!
There are a million reasons I love what I do. Yesterday I received a note in my email from my friend Bonnie. Unsolicited. Lovely. Special.

It said, "I encourage you to stop, take a moment, look around quietly during your gathering to see everyone who loves and admires you. It is a moment that will stay with you a long time."

Thank you Bonnie. xo

Getting Things Done

Tomorrow evening is THE event to stop into in Croton, NY as far as Backstage Salon is concerned.
Picture
Kathy and I knew we wanted to have a Cast Party; new ownership is a BIG deal!

You all recall this is a dream come true for Kathy. I am so delighted to be along helping her with her dream while she in turn helps me with my own each and every day.

You would be hard pressed to find a better partnership. Seriously.

We knew when the time came for the party we wanted to work with local businesses. Each and every person we are working with is a client of the salon.

HOW cool is that?

Flowers will be in colorful abundance from Sunshine & Clover.

A wide assortment of beverages will be on tap.

A tremendous variety of hors d'oeuvres will be devoured courtesy of Cole's Market. We also have the pleasure of three members of their renowned wait staff to help keep food moving.

Baked by Susan is baking an obscene amount of mini cupcakes.

Photographs will be taken by the immesenly gifted Rana Faure.

If you are around tomorrow night, I invite you to join us as we toast our new business, as we toast our supremely talented staff, as we honor our clients, and as we welcome new faces.

Picture
Yesterday, Jake went back to Riley for an MRI to check the spot they found on his scan 8 weeks ago. Results are in sometime today. Send all you got, OK? OK!

I haven't gotten any updates lately, but you know I always only want all good energy and thoughts out to Kim ~ Kelly ~ Nancy ~ Steve ~ Jullian ~ and of course, my Amy.

Feel free to add people to our powerful circle of love whenever you want to!
Picture
::: on the soapbox for a minute :::

Right now, in our small community, there is a proposed pipeline project, as well as a project involving the burial of high voltage cables. It will affect communities throughout Westchester.

It is beyond awful. Despite the discussions about this since last November many people remain unaware of this.

This WILL affect the quality of our lives.

I mean it.

I implore you to educate yourself about this.

HERE is a quick article.

I couldn't attend the rally last night, but HERE is a snippet of the rally that I implore you to watch.

Then, I equally implore you to sign the PETITION. Go to Public Comments and add your voice. Literally, just write the words, "Enough is enough" and sign it.

Back in my youth, when I had crazy amounts of cleaning or planning to do, Billy Idol was my go-to guy. I would crank up the stereo and get it done.

Planning the party has been like planning a wedding without a seating chart.

I am not about to take out my vacuum...here's a little Billy to kick start this day!

xo
It's a nice day to start again.
It's a nice day for a white wedding!
It's a nice day to start again.

THE Glass House Retreat

Women busting a move on the shore
The Glass House Retreat has always been a place - via print or the Magic Basement or even the front desk at the salon - where like-minded people are drawn towards each other. We come together to uplift ourselves, to send healing love and light to whomever needs it, and to go forth and serve humanity from a place of love, laughter and music.

So far, we are batting a thousand.

I have wanted to put together a retreat of sorts in the past year and it just never panned out. I don't know, maybe because of the salon?! Maybe because of fear. Maybe because of cost. I was over-thinking it.

Yesterday I had lunch with my friend Kacey. She and I have been discussing collaborating on an event for more than a year.

Pictured below is the planning session of THE first ever Glass House Retreat full day retreat.

We are going to have a day long event bringing in the people we know who will enlighten, entertain, empower, and of course, amuse you.
Picture
We are women of many liquids...
My supreme hope is that you will laugh, you will cry, and it will become a part of you.

Naturally, you will be so thrilled you will want a weekend retreat.

But first, baby steps.

SO - save the date - get out your calendar right this second and mark off January 11, 2015.

And yes, TGHR remains mine. I am the head writer and dream maker. HOWEVER, I use the word WE because it takes the knowledge of more than just me to make this happen.

I know a bazillion people and so does Kacey and so do you. By working together, my dream, with the help of someone who cares about it as much as I do, keeps it rolling towards reality. It is a massive blessing.

We can't have too much love or too much support or too many blessings in life. I continue to have an abundance of them.

When I told Kacey I already had the music in mind for today (thanks to young Peter), we both decided it was the perfect launching song despite it's crazy lyrics.

We will be busting a move in January and it will be glorious.

Join me!

Car Dancing

Yesterday, the kids and I were running errands all over the land.

I was driving.

By rights, that means I should have control of the music, right?

Of course, we all know the answer to that is a big, fat, no.

Peter was in the front so he commandeered the controls. First up was country. Then it was rap.

Bella was groaning through most of the choices as she prefers alternative and really, most importantly, she prefers to be in charge of the music.

It sucks to be in the back seat...

THEN Peter put this song on and we just seat danced all the way down Route 9.

It was fantastic.

Here's to your Tuesday.

Dance when it moves you!

xo

PS - I really didn't listen to the lyrics. When I came home and looked them up I laughed.
I got up and strolled over to the other side of the cantina
I asked the guy, "Why you so fly?" he said, "Funky Cold Medina"

Today I woke up at 3:00am-ish. I tossed and I turned. I sweated. I tossed and I turned some more. At around 4:30am I abandoned all of hope of falling back to sleep. I made a cup of coffee and I caught up on FB.

Back in the day, getting up at 5:00 in the morning was easy-peasy. I would get up, I would go to the gym, I would get ready for work, I would get on the train and I would be in NYC for a 9:00 work day.

I don't have that in me anymore and god knows I've tried. I much prefer an 8:30am walk along the river to a 5:00am gym time.

Just yesterday I was sharing with some friends what I do to shut off my mind. Funny how this kind of stuff turns around and bites you in the ass when you want to use it yourself for real.

There was no quieting this brain.
Picture
Ah youth! Brendon & Peter ~ Wildwood, NJ
Young Peter enjoyed a marvelous time down in Wildwood, NJ post prom. It was hilarious to listen to him describe the weekend and it was amplified when his friend Brendon joined us for dinner last night.

I have spent the last several weeks trying to remember if we went anywhere post senior prom 1979; I know we did NOT go to Wildwood.

I remember the prom was at Terrace On the Park in Queens. I remember our prom song was The Beatles "Here, There and Everywhere." I remember I borrowed Carolyn's dress. Tuxes with velvet accents and shirts with ruffles were in style. I am fairly certain there was a pre-prom event at Ellen's. I am thinking we drove ourselves - the concept of a party bus didn't exist then.

Does anyone out there remember?

Enjoy your Monday.

I hope to be napping at some point today.

Jane Is 50 Today

6/12/2014

Picture
Picture
JUST in case you forgot...
You all know Jane. She's been mentioned or profiled on this blog 37 times. (I just fact checked that statistic.)

Today's the big day. She turns the big 5-0.

Last week when she stopped at the salon with Annemarie I innocently (wink, wink) asked Am what she was doing hanging out with Jane for the day. Jane replied, "HELLO? Do you not know what Thursday is?!"

I lived with Jane for around 19 years and I have been living with Bella for 17. I have learned that Gemini Girls start celebrating their next birthday the day after their last birthday.

So...HELLO?! OF COURSE I KNEW WHAT NEXT THURSDAY WAS!

Jane's love of family is legendary.
Jane's love of family get together's is equally legendary.
Jane's love of friends is on par with her love of family.
Jane's love of socializing is epic.
Jane's love of travel and exploration and wonder is an astounding gift she has shared with her family.

If you need someone in your corner, trust me, you will pray it is Jane.

When shit hits the fan, Jane will be the clean-up crew.

If you need a cheerleader for your cause, her pom-poms will be raised in the air and she will use her best Oprah voice to make people sit up and pay attention.

If you need absolutely ANYTHING in the color purple, Jane is the go to person.

Jane is the passionate co-chair for the Yorktown Relay for Life. Her biggest wish is that EVERYONE who fights this insidious disease gets to celebrate more birthday's. Jane is also just a tad bit competitive, and so, if you can find it in your heart to help her raise a little more money to do so, I for one would be so grateful AND it would be THE best birthday gift Jane could get and well, you, YOU would get a tax write-off along with feeling pretty satisfied you did something fabulous.

Click HERE to go directly to her donation page.
Come on, do it now while it's on your mind.
Donate the price of today's cup of coffee, or lunch, or a glass of wine.
Pleasenadthankyou.

And yet another day of win-wins!

And so Jane, the baby of the Buckley girls is now 50.
(My mother is so horrified by this fact because she too damn young to have kids this old.)

Please join me in wishing her THE happiest of birthday's. I don't have enough positive adjectives to describe Jane, but by now, you know I adore her.

Have the best Birthday, Sweet Jane!

I love you to the moon and back.

Happy Birthday Tom

Because, you know, this is how we roll in this family!
On June 11, 1971 the house of sisters was forever altered with the addition of one Tom Buckley. I was ten years old, in fourth grade and thought for sure HE would be a she.

Blonde haired, blue eyed, and adorable, this baby became everybody's baby in some way, shape or form.

He ultimately ended up with four mothers.

When he was really young - maybe three or four, he was riding on the back of my bike.
What? You didn't do that? FINE. Be that way.
His little legs got caught in the spokes. Yep. Broken leg.

In a classic case of life's little ironies, when Bella was four she was hanging out with Uncle Tom and her dad and HER leg got broken. We're even.

I didn't really know Tommy all that well. Let's face it, I was a teenager and he was a pain in the ass brother.

THEN.

Well, he's all grown up now.
And he is a remarkable man.

I don't write about him too much, mostly because he's a he, and this blog is usually reserved for me. He is also far more private than I will ever be - he doesn't even have his own FB page. Gasp!

He has a beautiful and amazing family. He is the father of one son and three girls. (Karma) His wife is the love of his life.

His story is remarkable. He held an audience of us captivated when we were sharing a house together a few years ago and I witnessed how the young people looked up to and listened to him. I looked up to him and listened to him.

My mother has said more than once she wished she didn't give birth to such independent people. However, that independence has allowed each of us to pursue that which moves us at different times in our lives. We have each taken a leap of faith about many a different adventure and I am certain it's because we come from a family that keeps an eye on each other despite our independence.

This year my brother has taken a massive leap of faith in himself and his family. He quit his job in finance and started his own business. He is quite an inspiration!
Picture
Something fantastic with Rosie, his vizsla dog, in mind.
Picture
Paw Fuel Dog Treats is Tom's brainchild. It is THE best treat for active dogs, made with natural ingredients in the USA by a dad of four, a husband of one, a navy man, a brother to three and an all around terrific person.

I invite you to check out his web page and I certainly want you to check out his Facebook page HERE. Personally, I believe getting the FB page to at least 100 likes today would be an awesome birthday gift for Tom.

As for your dog, order them some treats and that will be a gift for them. It's a win-win for everyone!

Tom's middle initial is "A". If you ask him what the "A" stand for he will tell you Axl. (As opposed to Andrew, which is what it really is.) As a young teen in the '80's, this was his music, this was his band, and this is the man behind his middle name.

Happy, HAPPY Birthday Tom.

You rock as much, if not more so, as Axl.

All love!

And the way she looked was way beyond compare.

Soul Journey

I have a very busy mind.
Always have.
Probably always will.

Taking the time to really settle myself, silence my mind, and just BE is a major accomplishment for me.

While writing this blog I've got the song playing on repeat in the background. I've got six tabs open on my browser (and I just closed six). I've done two loads of laundry, checked the bank balances and I am texting.

Quieting my mind is something I have to make a conscious decision to do. I try to do it for at least five minutes each morning and before I fall asleep each night.

My soul claps when this happens.

I am on a never-ending journey to my best self.

How about you?

Here's to Monday. Settle down a little, OK?

When doing soul work, instrumentals are key.
THIS is one amazing instrumental, let me assure you!

Allergies

Yesterday was the first Friday in memory I didn't publish a "let's dance" blog piece.

It is me versus summer snow.

The snow won yesterday; I was incapable of getting out of bed.

Eight Motrin, two Sudafed, two cups of coffee, one reiki-therapy session AND one massage later I was able to function.

Granted, I was late to work, but thankfully Cate has my back and "let" me be. Or, as she quipped, "It's not like I can just leave..." Touché Cate, touché.

(For the record, I do bring Cate lunch when I am running late - OK, maybe this has happened more than once. Oh, the guilt...)

Jane AND Annemarie stopped by the salon for a quick hello - they were leaving as I was pulling in, late. I honked, they stayed.

So far this morning I am beating the crap out of my allergies; WHICH, for the freaking record, I didn't get until my twenties - what's up with THAT?!

I looked up dance songs about wishes and THIS is what I got. It's the day after Friday...Let's Dance!

Enjoy YOUR Saturday!

I was driving all over creation last night. I was listening to Pandora when this song came on. I loved it. (It's the same band who sings Amazing)

The songs lyrics aren't about happily ever after, but the music, ooohhh it just moved me.

Think about who's called you "baby" in your life...

There's always one person whose voice resonates through your head when you hear it.

Just so you know...

In totally non related news, I spoke with Joseph, my techo dude for the software yesterday and in fact, all those years of trouble shooting for Verizon came in mighty handy the past few days. Nothing is exactly fixed yet, BUT, we were able to replicate the issues and now there's a trouble ticket looming large.

Have the best Thursday.

What did he say?
He called me baby, baby all night long
What did he do?
He called me baby, baby all night long
