Surrender

I had a discussion with a friend about surrender this summer.

I don't think of surrender as a negative action.

My friend didn't agree with me. (At first.) I believe they saw things from my point of view after a bit of time had passed.

My feeling is to just let go and let whatever is going to happen ...happen.

Just be.

This is not an easy concept to grasp.

While trying to define this to myself I came across this beautiful song. It brought me to a place of just being.

What does the word surrender mean to you? I'd love to know.

"Surrender Dorothy" is my motto. I did not have a very smooth transition into motherhood . . . I tried to put my daughter onto a predictable sleeping and eating schedule right away so I could keep up with housework, my own school work, along with keeping a little involved with things at work because 3 months away seemed like forever. One morning I was taking a walk and felt suddenly overwhelmed, and just as suddenly I got a mental image of the scene on the Wizard of Oz when the witch sky writes "Surrender Dorothy" with her broom. Those words have brought me tremendous peace since then. I got odd reactions from friends who were starting to have their own families who would ask, :"How do you do it?" and I answered that Surrender Dorothy was my motto. Some said it sounded like I gave up, but I think of it more as figuring out what is most important and giving in to it as a way to prioritize everything else.

Surrender is to give in, not to give up,to allow a natural order to prevail rather than to force one's will.
